"I grew up in Denbigh, Virginia. I knew the itch of peach fuzz, the cut of an oyster shell on a sandy bare foot, the piney smell of the deep woods. On sultry summer afternoons I clambered inside my father's milk truck, hunting among the clear ice chunks scattered over the glass milk bottles for one just the right size to cool my sweaty face and hands. . . . But the best memories are the storytelling . . ."
--Preface

A kerosene lamp explodes. Cats wash dishes. A thief enters the barn. A pie smashes against the refrigerator. Nelson must decide what to do when he hears a visitor say she will take all his father's money. Susan pretends to be sick and misses more than the school play.

In The Flying Pie and Other Stories, Susan Yoder Ackerman shares these and other true stories which people from the Tidewater community of Virginia have been telling for many years.

Now retold for children, these stories entice readers through action, excitement, and a crisp and sparkling style. At the same time, they convey Christian values of honesty, compassion, and forgiveness.
