"This book is a national treasure, the story of caring people helping others with devastating losses in a spirit of selflessness, joy, and sacrifice. The oral histories, disaster case studies, and colorful photographs present the rich history of Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) in a lively way. We value our opportunity to work alongside MDS."

--James Lee Witt, Director, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

Hesston, Kansas, 1990. Disaster strikes. A storm-damaged community lies in ruins. An eerie silence prevails. A few former residents wander aimlessly. A van with an unusual emblem on its side picks its way through the tangled streets, Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) volunteers are on the scene.

MDS has another job to do. A chain saw sputters to life. Hands start to sort the tangled mess. Cleanup is under way to prepare for rebuilding. Here are moving stories of caring people helping others.

With photos and gripping accounts, Lowell Detweiler shows and tells the dramatic story of MDS. From its start in 1950 in Kansas, the movement spread, and now MDS has reached its 50th anniversary, which this book helps to celebrate.

"An in-depth look at MDS and the lives it has touched. A testimony demonstrating the powerful effects of people helping people, putting God’s love into action."

--Millard Fuller, Founder and President, Habitat for Humanity International
