"Healthy missional congregations call, train and empower leaders to lead in all areas of congregational life. This manual provides training from an Anabaptist Mennonite perspective and builds on the most recent writings of ministerial leadership polity. I recommend it to pastors, ministry teams, and to our congregations." --Dale Stoltzfus, Mennonite Church USA Office of Ministerial Leadership

Elders or deacons have a vital calling and function in building strong congregations. But they need clear guidelines and training to be effective. This manual provides practical instructions to help pastors and congregational leaders bring clarity and purpose to this key role.
Every session in the manual reflects on Jesus' method of training leaders. In "Sent Out with Instructions" lay leaders will learn what they need to minister as deacons and elders. An "As You Go" section contains group assignments designed to move participants to act.

"We tend to have warm sentimental feelings about wonderful elders or deacons that we have known. But what elders/deacons are supposed to do is often hazy...The core value of this resource is found in the clear, easy-to-use chapters that address the vital skills-sets required for this ministry. I highly recommend this excellent resource for any pastors who seek to mobilize and empower their elders/deacons." --Sven Eriksson, Denominational Minister, Mennonite Church Canada
