NEW FAITH & LIFE RESOURCE TITLE

Beyond Me
Grounding Youth Ministry in God’s Story

Effective ministry to youth today is more than pizza feeds and ski-trips, says Wendell J. Loewen. More than ever, he says, people who work with youth in congregations are seeking ways to look beneath programs—to understand the consumerism and alienation in postmodern youth culture and then respond with mature understandings of God’s call.
Loewen seeks to speak to that need. “Most youth ministry books are pretty thin theologically,” says Loewen, who teaches at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas. “Very few are based on more than a collection of verses that reflect an externally imposed theological framework.”
In his book, as in his 20 years of youth ministry, Loewen reclaims the “bigger, more durable theology” that he finds in his Mennonite and Anabaptist roots—one that is biblically rooted in the story of God’s reign and takes the church seriously as a “contrast community.”
Beyond Me is written accessibly and practically for all who are working and training to work in youth ministry, whether as youth ministers or as lay leaders. Rich in personal stories and practical examples, Loewen helps youth workers know what postmodern youth ministry looks like, but without simply giving another model to copy without thinking it through.

COPUBLISHED TITLE

Take Our Moments and Our Days: An Anabaptist Prayer Book
Morning and Evening Prayers for Advent through Pentecost
Arthur Paul Boers, Eleanor Kreider, John Rempel, Mary H. Schertz, and Barbara Nelson Gingerich

We invite you to share in a form of prayer that originated in the earliest Christian times and has continued through the centuries. The first volume of Take Our Moments and Our Days: An Anabaptist Prayer Book is a four-week cycle of morning and evening prayer services prepared for ordinary time. This second volume in draft form is for the seasons of the Christian year—Advent through Pentecost.
The distinctive Anabaptist flavor of this collection of daily prayers is evident in the predominance of Jesus’ voice, the space for communal reflection on scripture, and the specific choices of Bible readings. We offer these services in the hope that you will find in them a way of prayer through which the voice of Jesus will pervade your whole day.

Stories: How Mennonites Came to Be
“In this accessible and well-written introduction to Mennonite history, John D. Roth carefully and evenhandedly recounts the Mennonite experience from its origins in 16th-century Switzerland to its astonishing 20th-century growth in Africa and Asia. Well-chosen and effectively narrated stories introduce each chapter. . .
“Especially effective is Roth’s first chapter, where he discusses six important early Christian commitments that reemerge in 16th-century Anabaptism. These include voluntary membership, sharing of possessions, church discipline (accountability to each other), commitment to nonviolence, nonconformity to the world, and a mission-minded culture.
“The heart of Roth’s work are his three chapters on Anabaptist origins and its spread from Switzerland and south Germany into the Low Countries, north Germany, central Europe and southern Russia. Unlike many earlier works, Roth fully acknowledges the diverse and conflicting views of early Anabaptists and the remarkable role of Menno Simons in bringing unity to a divided, confused and greatly misunderstood body of people, who gladly took his name to disassociate themselves from the excesses of more radical Anabaptist.”The Mennonite Quarterly Review

A Precarious Peace
Yoderian Explorations on Theology, Knowledge, and Identity

“‘Christian theology is exploration. It is ceaselessly on the move.’ So says Chris K. Huebner. Huebner explores the issues of Mennonite theology, knowledge and identity. Essential to his work is a commitment to the decentering of the self from these issues, ‘explod[ing] that which we take to be given.’
“The peace of Christ comes as a gift and, as such, requires us to remain in a posture of reception and thanksgiving, rather than a position of control and manipulation. Too often, the question of theology becomes one of fixed place or status.
“Huebner refers to his work of de-centering as ‘Yoderian.’ In keeping with the work of John Howard Yoder, Huebner shines the light of non-Constantinianism into various contemporary social and theological corners. Non-Constantinianism is a way of reading the world that challenges any reliance on power and violence for legitimacy. . . .
“As someone who has not been formed in formal Mennonite theology, I am greatly encouraged by Huebner’s work. I was impressed with the range of dialogue partners enlisted for his task.”Canadian Mennonite

Exodus
Believers Church Bible Commentary

“The book of Exodus stands at the heart of the Old Testament and is foundational to the way we understand both Old Testament theology and God’s work portrayed in the whole of Scripture. Waldemar Janzen’s treatment of Exodus is a combination of fine scholarship and careful reading within the life of the church. I recommend this volume highly both as a resource for preaching from Exodus as well as for one’s own study of the biblical text.”—Brethren in Christ History and Life

The Robe of God
Reconciliation, the Believers Church Essential

“This work of seasoned Mennonite pastor-theologian Myron S. Augsburger provides a panorama of theological principles that makes the doctrine of reconciliation the keystone for all its contents. Augsburger contends that reconciliation in Christian theology must be reassessed continually to determine how it measures up against the biblical principles endowed by the Greatest of all Reconcilers—Jesus Christ.
“The book is a combination of systematic and practical theology overview.” Review and Expositor
