'More-with-Less Cookbook' updated

Herald Press classic keeps selling after 35 years

Thousands of Mennonites have grown up with the tasty recipes and progressive ideas of More-with-Less Cookbook. Thousands of people beyond Mennonite circles bought the book as well, leading to the startling phenomenon of those who became Mennonite because of a cookbook.

More-with-Less, first published by Herald Press in 1976, is now second on the list of all-time best sellers for Herald Press. Some 740,000 copies have been sold, and before too long it will overtake the number-one best-seller—The Amish by John Hostetler, first published in 1952.

This summer Herald Press released its third edition of More-with-Less. The introductory chapters of the late author, Doris Janzen Longacre, have been edited and revised for today's cooks.

Statistics and nutritional information have been updated to reflect current American and Canadian eating habits, health issues, and diet guidelines. The new U.S. food chart—"My Plate"—was slipped in at the last minute and placed alongside Canada's "Food Guide."

But the message of the book has changed little from the one that Longacre promoted 35 years ago, when the first edition of the cookbook was released. In many ways she was ahead of her time in advocating for people to eat more whole grains and more vegetables and fruit, with less meat, saturated fat, and sugars.

More-with-Less is part of Herald Press's World Community Cookbook series that is published in cooperation with Mennonite Central Committee, a worldwide ministry of relief, development, and peace.

Longacre, who lived in Akron, Pa., and was associated with MCC for many years, was a registered dietician, author, speaker, mother of two, and husband to Paul Longacre. She studied at Bethel College, Goshen College, and Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary.

In 1979, just prior to the completion of her second book—Living More with Less—Longacre died at age 39 after a battle with cancer.

The updated edition of More-with-Less Cookbook is available from Herald Press by calling 1-800-245-7894 (U.S.) or 1-800-631-6535 (Canada). Price: $19.99 USD/$22.99 CAD (paperback) and $24.99 USD/$28.99 CAD (hard cover/spiral).

Herald Press is the book imprint of MennoMedia, a ministry of Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Church Canada.
